The History of Sprowston Lodge

Sprowston Lodge, a striking Georgian villa, was built in 1801 by John Morse, a prominent local figure who was not only a successful brewer but also served as sheriff and mayor of Norwich. The property eventually passed into the hands of the distinguished Stracey family, who resided at nearby Rackheath Hall. It was during their tenure that additional structures, such as the coach house and workers’ cottages, were added to the estate.

For much of the 19th century, Sprowston Lodge saw extensive commercial use. However, by 1916, the property had been purchased by the esteemed Lowry-Cole family. The lodge stood as a cherished family home until tragedy struck in 1965 when a significant fire swept through the house.

A year later, in 1966, Sprowston Lodge was bought at auction by the Hackett family. They undertook a major reconstruction of the property, restoring it to its former glory, and it’s believed that the house has remained in the Hackett family’s ownership ever since.

Today, Sprowston Lodge continues to captivate with its rich history, blending Georgian elegance with modern comforts.
